FAQ

Question About Our Recovery Service

How does the Tri-Star Protectors Recovery Program Work?

We provide our clients a disposal bin at the well site to safely and efficiently store used thread protectors after inspection.

The bin is routinely emptied, and the contents transported to our strategically located facilities around the country for processing, reconditioning and recycling.

In return, we provide our recovery customers with detailed manifests and reports that give them concrete information on the tonnage collected and kept out of landfills.

How is all of the non-reusable plastic waste disposed of?

Thread protector waste is 100% recycled and sold as a reconditioned thread protector or, if damaged, the product is cleaned, ground and remanufactured into new product.

Are there any other options for onsite protector storage besides the recovery bins?

For a well-to-well service, the bins are the only option we currently have available and we strongly encourage their use for maximum storage efficiency. However, we also sell ENVIRO thread protector storage bags for short-term and one-off projects.

On average, how often do you pick up recovery bins from a well site?

There are typically two pick-ups per well on wells 12,000 ft. and deeper, and a single pick-up per well on smaller depths.

Will we be responsible for moving this container from well to well?

Yes, our customers move the recovery bin along with the rig.

Is Tri-Star an approved recycler for these products, and through what agency/agencies?

Tri-Star Protectors Service is in full compliance with all environmental certifications and standards for both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality (TCEQ). In addition our program has received award recognition status from the TCEQ.

Questions On Program Benefits

What are the main benefits of recycling our thread protectors?

The benefits of Tri-Star Protectors recovery program are broad-based and unmatched in quality, reporting and depth of service. Every thread protector generated is guaranteed to be 100% recycled and kept out of landfills.

This is an environmentally beneficial approach to protector waste management. In addition, there is 100% traceability documentation for every thread protector generated as well as a monthly consolidation report. (See the links for samples.)

The benefits of the Tri-Star recovery program go beyond corporate image (which is important in and of itself). Recycling any product at the well site such as thread protectors fits well with overall Best Management Practices at the well site.

Also of great importance is maintaining a clean and hazard-free work site, which is not possible with plastic thread protectors strewn around the well site.

In addition, the Texas Railroad Commission (RRC) Policy of waste minimization suggests recycling of all products at the well site whenever possible.

How does Tri-Star’s reporting documentation benefit us?

Every large-quantity generator of industrial waste is required to submit an annual plan for reducing waste in the calendar year. Tri-Star Protectors recovery program qualifies for this reduction plan. Our consolidated documentation can be used to report on this directly, as all waste monitoring by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is done on a tonnage basis.

Does the thread protector tonnage correlate to a specific tax credit per ton?

Specific tax dollar amounts are not currently available. However, there is a Federal requirement for reporting all carbon emissions on an annual basis. Indications are that a tax on these emissions is forthcoming, and therefore there would be an economic benefit to reducing this footprint.

Moreover, there is currently an actively traded carbon market in Europe. We have been assured that we can convert the tonnage of thread protector waste to carbon credit, and we are working on plan to do so. More details on this will follow in the near future.

What are some of the official types of environmental recognition our company could be eligible to receive?

In Texas, you could qualify for recognition under the Annual Waste Reduction Program administered by the TCEQ Clean Texas Program.

How does the cradle-to-grave accountability report work?

The concept of cradle-to-grave is such that whomever generated the waste is responsible from point of receipt, or creation, to disposal. We provide you with the documentation detailing the environmentally friendly disposal and recycling of your protector waste, giving you full accountability and traceability with the relevant regulatory authorities.
